Job offered: Materials developer - Self-access online teacher training courses

Type: Contract
Location: Remote

The British Council is the UK's international cultural relations body.  We create long-term relationships that provide cultural, diplomatic and economic benefit for the UK.  We provide access to the UK’s assets (language, arts, education and society), especially in big and emerging markets, as well as opportunities for millions of people to engage in global dialogue.

Our Teacher Development team is embarking on an ambitious project to convert existing online moderated courses (delivered via Moodle) for online self-access, and we are seeking experienced Moodlers with a TEFL background (or a background in training) to help us create high-quality, engaging self-access materials.  Phase 1 of this project will focus on one course, called English for Teaching (level 1).

Project summary

  • To convert existing online moderated course materials for online self-access delivery; there will be no moderator intervention.  Interaction with other course participants may be possible via forums.
  • The initial phase of the project will focus on one course, called ‘English for Teaching’ (level 1), which has been written as a moderated course in Moodle 1.9.  The target audience for this particular course is teachers of English whose CEF English level is A2 (and B1 by the end of the course).  There are approximately 200 hours of content for the whole moderated course.
  • The self-access course is to be delivered on Moodle 2.  Generally only ‘core Moodle’ activities will be used.  However, materials created on external editors or software, such as Captivate, eXe, etc., are specifically excluded from the project, even if they are SCORM compliant.
  • Resources from the online course include coursework, moderator notes, audio and video materials (all in digital format), and the course utilises these materials in the form of text, audio, graphics, interactive exercises (e.g. quizzes) and activities (forums, wikis, etc.).
  • Work will start on the 5th of September 2011, with an online forum to generate ideas and establish the team and will include a synchronous online meeting.  The final deadline for the project will depend on how many content developers are involved; ideally the first phase (with English for Teaching 1) will be completed by the end of October 2011.

Qualifications and experience

  • DELTA or equivalent, or a qualification in training
  • Experience developing and/or producing online self-access learning materials, preferably in an EFL context
  • Experience with content development in Moodle 2

Individuals interested in applying to work on this project are invited to contact rena.penna@britishcouncil.cz for an application form and further details.
