Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:
A minimum of 2 years work experience in web application programming and development using PHP. It is helpful to have experience developing tools for end users in an academic environment.

Desired technical qualifications:
- Knowledge of and experience in writing clean, secure, object oriented PHP
- Experience in writing interactive asynchronous web applications using JavaScript (YUI) or similar tools
- Programming experience with web services (XML-RPC, SOAP, WS-Security and related protocols)
- Experience designing, building, and querying database tables in SQL databases
- Experience with multiple database products from different vendors (MySQL, Oracle, SQLServer, etc.)
- Experience with the Moodle platform is highly desirable
- Experience with Open Source software in general is a plus
- Experience using version control, task management systems, and documentation tools to provide software releases and associated documentation in an orderly fashion and to facilitate team software development.
- Experience architecting software solutions that are built to scale, be flexible for different uses, and be extended and enhanced, even when the initial project requirements may be a small prototype.
Principal duties:

The UW-Madison Moodle Service (UWMM), is looking to add an outgoing, enthusiastic and talented full time software developer to our group. UWMM is run by Computer-Aided Engineering (CAE), the University of Wisconsin-Madison's academic computing group for the College of Engineering.

UWMM's mission is to run the UW's Moodle service. Moodle is an open source, PHP based Learning Management System (LMS) where instructors can build their class websites. This group is focused exclusively on innovating the practice of teaching and learning across campus by consulting, implementing, integrating and building customizations and extensions to Moodle. We seek to be a catalyst for the transformation of teaching through technology on the Madison campus and beyond.

This position serves as a primary software developer for creating new Moodle plugins, as well as enhancement and maintenance of existing plugins. Languages & skills we use include PHP, JavaScript (YUI) and web services. The developer also is instrumental in working closely with faculty and our hosting and support staff to ensure the best possible learning experience as well as a highly available and scalable product.

The successful candidate will be comfortable innovating, being creative, and being part of a team. You will be asked to help faculty and university staff think through solutions to teaching & learning challenges. This may include implementing and extending existing plugins, building & iterating on prototypes for new approaches, or utilizing and configuring core Moodle functionality in new and different ways.

This role is a consultant, in every sense of the word. We focus on serving instructors' and their students' needs through the Moodle LMS as customized for the particular environment of UW-Madison. Examples include Moodle activity modules, authorization and enrollment plugins, blocks and local plugins. We are often involved with building plugins that interface with existing UW enterprise data services and working with campus partners to facilitate this type of data sharing.

- Ability to meet with customers to clarify objectives, functional/data requirements, and other project considerations (like available funding and timelines) for new plugin development, maintenance or enhancements, or acquisition and implementation of existing contributed or commercial plugins.
- Experience analyzing requirements and drafting technical approaches to a given project, including high-level designs and technical architecture. For change requests, also assess implications of changes to related parts of the overall system.
- Ability to assist in customer training and draft customer documentation as required for assigned projects.
- Desire and motivation to contribute to the mission of a world-class university
- Understanding of pedagogical best practices, and some knowledge of teaching and learning research and associated terminology is a plus
- Experience with Agile methodology (or iterative software development in general) is a plus
- Experience with test driven development and behavior driven design is a plus
- Candidate should demonstrate a strong interest in keeping current with new developments in technology and professional practice

Appointment Type: Academic Staff
Full Time Salary Rate: Minimum $50,000 Maximum $80,000 ANNUAL (12 months)
