 General Summary

Partnering with faculty members or other subject matter experts, the instructional designer designs, develops, implements, and evaluates online courses using sound instructional design practices employing multimedia, video, audio, and other emerging technologies. The instructional designer participates in the review and redesign cycle of existing courses/programs and in faculty development for online learning.

The instructional designer works with external service providers, faculty and other subject matter experts, information technology departmental staff, and other university personnel regarding all elements of instructional development, production, mission, and infrastructure support for online learning. The instructional designer is innovative in approaches to learning improvement and curriculum design, and has a strong grounding in the theoretical foundations for such innovations.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities Include

  1. Understand and implement online pedagogy, instructional design, and adult learning principles.
  2. Demonstrate effective interpersonal communication skills and the ability to work with different levels within the organization, to build relationships, to actively listen, and to assist faculty member or other subject matter expert in translating concepts into engaging, pedagogically sound online courses.
  3. Possess effective communication skills: written (including editing and proof-reading), verbal, and presentation (including visuals).
  4. Possess ability and experience to effectively utilize the required technology tools.
  5. Possess ability and experience to effectively utilize the required technology tools.
  6. Possess a successful work history, supported by references, in a work setting similar to the position for which the candidate is applying.
  7. Demonstrate the ability to practice confidentiality with sensitive information.

Knowledge and Skills Required

  1. A lifestyle in agreement with Olivet Nazarene University and the Statement of Mission, Faith and Lifestyle Covenant.
  2. Master’s Degree or higher with concentration in instructional design, cognition and learning theory, online learning, or a related field preferred. An equivalent background in instructional technology with some formal study and significant experience in instructional design theory, practice, and assessment may be considered.
  3. Experience in instructional development with significant work in instructional and curriculum design.
  4. Understanding of effective online instructional design principles and strategies, and ability to stay current with emerging online pedagogical practices.
  5. Demonstrated ability to manage processes needed to deploy resources in a complex and demanding development schedule.
  6. Experience teaching at the university level, especially online, preferred.
  7. Experience with learning management systems (especially Moodle) and other software for the production and delivery of online learning.
  8. Commitment to the mission, values, priorities, and lifestyle standards of Olivet Nazarene University.
