Web Developer Job Description

The Healthy Heart Society of BC (HHS) and the Impact BC Communications department has an opening for a web developer to support the work of both organizations. The opening is a full-time, salaried position. It will suit an experienced professional with ability to work in an innovative and active environment supporting the improvement of health for people in British Columbia. The work environment is fast–paced and community oriented.

The Healthy Heart Society is a partnership between health care professionals and industry established to encourage and support the development of programs to reduce and prevent heart disease. It is an independent non-profit organization, registered as a society in BC. HHS works with partners, supporters, volunteers and health care professionals to reduce the impact of cardiovascular disease.

Impact BC is an innovative program initiated by the Healthy Heart Society. The BC Ministry of Health provides funding for the program and BC’s five Health Authorities supports it along with the BC Medical Association and the BC College of Family Physicians.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Work closely with users and visual designers to develop user friendly (ie functional, fast and intuitive) sites whether they are intranet or extranet sites.
  • Participate in the design, development and sustainability of a wide range of e-Learning and CMS tools for web sites, online communities, and educational environments as well as supporting administration systems. Designs and develops software for eLearning projects including applications that automatically generate interactive learning objects.
  • Participates in phases of the software lifecycle: team project planning, requirements analysis, design, development, testing, and maintenance.
  • Researches emerging technologies and current trends in eLearning design, experience design, web design and communications to apply in new design projects
  • Accurately track and report project task, activity, documentation, time information per project standards (i.e. daily submission, detailed accounting of activities, follow up documentation, etc.).
  • Monitor site activity and track site usage and work on search engine optimization for various sites
  • Work with communications team to effectively manage and enhance website content
  • Providing technical expertise and guidance for team members

Skills Required

  • 5+ years of relevant experience in system development using Web 2.0 applications and technologies and content management system product development
  • University Degree or College Diploma in computer science, programming or related field, (or equivalent experience)
  • Expert knowledge of HTTP/ HTTPS, CSS, HTML, XSLT, DHTML, XML, PHP, CSS, JavaScript, Ajax, Jquery, MySQL
  • Experience developing for Content Management Systems (Drupal and Moodle Platform)
  • Knowledge of FTP, SMTP, IIS, TCP/ IP, DNS and other internet protocols
  • Knowledge of search engine optimization, web statistics
  • Experience with user-centered design, information architecture and usability testing
  • Strong understanding of open source web technologies and LAMP environment
  • Experience with online publishing tools
  • Knowledge of best practices in Web design
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to multi-task/ change task on short notice
