SCHEDULE:

Office hours are primarily weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., but responsibilities require additional hours and flexibility that can include evenings and weekends.

 

POSITION DESCRIPTION:

  • Oversees Learning Management System (LMS) operation and maintenance
  • Resolves escalated LMS user issues
  • Communicates LMS status to stakeholders
  • Coordinates on hardware lifecycle
  • Assists with other Help Desk duties

The LMS Administrator reports to the Assistant Director for Technical Services within Information Technology. The LMS Administrator is responsible for the daily health of the Learning Management System (LMS) employed by the university (currently Blackboard, but interested in moving to Moodle). This consists of constantly being apprised of its available resources such as CPU, memory, and hard drive space, and reporting any needs to have those assessed. It also involves remaining aware of the Blackboard services’ status and communicating any abnormal operation to stakeholders such as the Asst. Directors for Technical Services and Network Services, and the Directors of Instructional Technology and Distance Learning, along with the Chief Information Officer.

 

 

The LMS Administrator must also attend to any escalated LMS technical issues. It is the LMS Administrator’s responsibility to constantly monitor the IT—Incoming queue for LMS problems and not only take ownership of more difficult problems, but to guide the Help Desk technicians with solutions and help develop training programs to advance the LMS knowledge of the other Help Desk team members.

 

 

 

 

 

Due to the complexity of hardware and software that make up the LMS infrastructure, it is the role of the LMS Administrator to be the primary liaison between the LMS vendor and our university. It falls to the LMS Administrator to perform any patches, upgrades, service packs, hotfixes, and other routine maintenance to ensure the highest possible uptime and reliability of the LMS service. There should be a persistent line of communication between the LMS Administrator and the LMS vendor to pursue any outstanding technical issues with the system; this may involve monthly, weekly, or even daily calls/emails to resolve issues. The LMS Administrator will strive to maintain a strategic relationship with our LMS vendor.

 

 

 

 

The LMS Administrator must have thorough knowledge of the LMS software systems and be able to troubleshoot issues with those systems along with the operating system and database engine that the software resides on (currently Windows Server, Windows SQL Server, IIS, and Apache Tomcat). A proficiency in SQL, .NET, and other web languages like Perl, CSS, and HTML is critical. The LMS Administrator must coordinate with the Assistant Director for Network Services on appropriate hardware replacement times for the infrastructure of the LMS.

 

 

During downtime and when all other duties have been fulfilled or are on hold, the LMS Administrator is also expected to fulfill the obligation of a Help Desk technician. This includes fielding Help Desk calls, responding to support emails, and assisting in the resolution of the technical issues of the university’s constituents. During this time, LMS guidance and training should also be coached to other Help Desk team members.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or related field or minimum of four years field experience.   Excellent written and verbal communications skills.  A+ core hardware certification is preferred.
