Block: ActiveUsers

Type: Block
Requires: Moodle 1.8 or later
Status: Contributed
Maintainer(s): Rashan Anushka - rap At UCSC cmb ac lk

The objective of the block was to list the most active users of the LMS along with a ranking. Each user is a given a rank according to the number of hits made by him. The rank is simply the Z score of the number of hits made by the user.

Rank of User X = ( Hits by X – Avg. of hits made by a user ) /Std Dev of hits made by users

The top 10 users (this number can be configured) having the maximum rank will be displayed in the block along with his or her photo, rank. The objective of this block is to promote the usage of the LMS. By completing this basic implementation we have identified some future implementations or extensions to this block to get the maximum use of it, such as Improve the ranking algorithms, so that each activity can have a different weights attached to them. Further, different weights to be attached to different sub-activities related to a particular activity (e.g. viewing a forum vs. posting to the forum).

Can the ability to show/hide this block from defined users be added? I only want tutors and admins alike to be able to see this graph, not students.

I've tried version 0.5 from sourceforge. Moodle version 1.9 with php 4. Tried to upgrade from version 0.3. After installation (overwriting 0.3) moodle gives a white screen. Also tried blocks/activeusers/db/upgrade.php, but no succes.
Maybe php 4 is the problem, or moodle 1.9?
I hope you can have an other look at 0.5. Thank you

I download and unziped this module on a XP system.

In Admin I get this error at top of page:

Module "activeusers" is not readable - check permissions

I check system permission and read only status of folder. Haven't found the problem yet.

I used moodle 1.9 and extract the zip file inside the "blocks" folder and login as admin and click on "Notifications" link in site administration block.after that I found blank page and blocks drop down don't have activeuser block list.

    Hi there.

I've just downloaded you block and move it to the blocks folder of my moodle and i get:

Parse error: syntax error, unexpected T_STATIC, expecting T_OLD_FUNCTION or T_FUNCTION or T_VAR or '}' in /home/espalmel/public_html/moodle/blocks/activeusers/block_activeusers.php on line 257

    I'm using Moodle1.8.2 (2007021520) on PHP Version 4.4.7

Do I need PHP 5? Or is it something else?

    Thank you very much.

Cliff - With reference to step 2. Where exactly do you rename 'block_course_menu' to 'b'? I attempted this for my Moodle 1.9.2, which is loaded on a Windows server, and it did not work. I did not see it as an option to add it to my course's front page even after running Notifications. Can you also post the code showing the before and after?

Has anyone had the issue of the block not updating unless you go into edit mode, update, and select the Update Statistics Now check box? The block doesn't seem to reflect the latest user statistics unless I do this manually on a periodic basis.

    Hi Rashan

Have you updated this Block to work with Moodle 1.9.4+ ?

I've noticed that my number of active users displayed has dropped down to around 10 - even though there are more active users than this.

I've tried altering dates and updating, but still the number of users displayed seems to be getting gradually less sad

    Any ideas?
Thanks for your work on this Block!

    Hi,

Im using Moodle version 1.9.8+ with a custom theme.

Installing this block screwed up my theme.

I got an extra white space above the standard navigation bar and in a number of other places there were some misalignments e.g. login Page skewed off to the right, HTML editor half-sized and buggy looking.

Removing the block completely (remove from manage blocks and removal of the folder from blocks directory) restored normal service.

Nice block though - just wish it didn't effect my theme. smile

    Cheers
    Dan Phillips
