by murray rothbard.

There is the issue of typing Hebrew fonts. So far it can't be done in moodle. That makes it kinda difficult. Unless I could do a unicode font. ?

by Paul Ganderton.
Hi Murray,

I agree with Anthony - interesting task, but we all know Moodle can rise to any occasion! As I was thinking about this an idea struck me. I agree the wiki is best but what is the end purpose of the task? Is it just to get students to work on the text or to make something more permanent and useful to a wider community? If the latter then it might be worthwhile using a book module and setting student permissions to allow them to edit it. Once completed the text could be used, you could add/edit etc. but newer students couldn't. I use forums extensively to promote discussion so it's always worthwhile having one. Students working on the text (in whatever module you choose) would have a chance to swap ideas and discuss details online without just changing the wiki/book where edits have no real discussion prior to the change i.e. it would promote collaboration in my opinion.

Hope this helps,

Paul

by Anthony Borrow.
Wow, Hebrew exegesis sounds pretty heavy. I am taking a course on Wisdom literature this semester and if I knew Hebrew it would have been very helpful. In any case, I wonder if the Wiki activity might be the most helpful where you could have the text and then create pages for translation, structure, etc. Multiple students could work on building up the wiki but at the end you would have a good reference for the students on a particular text. If you keep your students busy enough you could wind up with a rather impressive commentary! Peace - Anthony

by murray rothbard.

I am trying to teach Hebrew exegesis using Moodle. My goal is to have the class collaborate on one text. So I will provide them with a text and have each student do a different task. For example, student A would have the task of structuring the text, student B would have the task of translating the passage, student C would be charged with another task and so on.
I am trying to determine what tool would be best to do this. Would a forum be the way to set this up? Help me out here. thanks,

If you are still listening out there... you need to export the entries before you reset your class from the previous semester. After the reset, you can import them back in. In my understanding you will then have the previous entries you want.

by Paul Ganderton.
Hi James,

I think many of us would see this as a happy problem because you've clearly got loads of people into Moodle!

For my 2c I think there are two approaches that you should consider:

a) Back-end: file management. Set out a file naming protocol and a file management structure ditto. This means that whoever adds material to Moodle will have to use a standardised system. New staff adding material will find it easier to locate/check/store. If it helps, I learned this the hard way as shifting files in Moodle does not carry over any hyperlinks from their parent pages (as it does in Dreamweaver for example);

b) Front end: have a common look and feel between all courses. This gets staff used to where things go and allows students to be more confident they can locate information. I tend to use banner logos on all topics with the admin side having the same image and different headings followed by topics with their own distinctive style. The content of each topic depends on the year group but for my senior people (screenshot as requested) I have a lesson plan outline, forum (my must-have to gather comments), book (THE way IMHO to gather data, lesson notes, key material - in colour not the usual B&W photocopying, extension material, websites etc in a neat package with each webpage/"chapter" being a specific lesson or lesson set). Any extra work e.g. fieldwork in my case, gets its own logo and a link to another webpage.

I've used this for a couple of years. Student response is good and getting better. My latest crop sorted out the senior work before the class formally started (and told me that they had a Facebook page to swap meeting times, ideas etc.!!) so it's clear that this works, at least for my lot.

Hope this helps,

Paul

by Dianna Martinez.
Another possibility beyond the use of the internal web pages is the Book module. This is a great way to organize chunks of learning into packages. I've found that it's a great way to provide both review and enrichment activities beyond the basic info.

The key from my perspective is that every thing for a topic is in one place and it has a flow which compliments my face to face instruction.

It's not an add-on so your administrator should be able to turn it on if it's not already.

There is a secret to creating the books though. The Moodle activities (forums, etc. need to be created in a hidden block and then the activities themselves need to be set to show within the hidden block.

by Peter Bruce.
Hi,

I am now using Udutu to build course content. THese can be zipped as a scorm package and then imported into moodle. The Ududt lessons can replace the lesson activity in Moodle. I find it easy to use , and visually appealling. Powerpoint presentations can be easily imported and a narrative track included.

Regards,

Peter Bruce
