Can I have a gradebook entry without an assignment?

I am a newbie to moodle. I have installed it on our web server and am experimenting with it to see how it works. I am using version 1.8.4+ (2007021541). Here’s my question:

Is it possible to have a grade in gradebook without an assignment? I have some things that I would like to enter grades for that are just for my own bookkeeping, but don’t need to be assignments.

In versions before 1.9, gradebook items are tied directly to activities (like assignments).

Starting with 1.9 you can add items directly to the gradebook.

If you add an Assignment of the type 'offline assignment', it will show up in the course and gradebook, but will not require interaction from the students. You can then choose to hide it in the course if you don't want the kids to know its there but will see their grades for it. If you hide it in the gradebook too, they won't know the grades you record either.
