Win2003, Linux and LDAP Authentication

Win2003, Linux and LDAP Authentication

We are implementing Moodle in our school in 2004 (which is not that far away)!!!  We run a windows platform and we have a domain controller (win2003) running active directory to run our authentication processes.  We have decided to run Moodle on a Linux box as per previous advice sort (and thank you for that).  What I want to know now is (which may be a little nieve but I have not had a lot to do with cross platform things) to authenticate Moodle via LDAP using active directory (2003) does it need to have authentication to the Linux/Apache or just to the PHP side of things??

Can this be done??  Is it the best way to do authentication given our set up??

HELP!!!  I can't find comprehensive documentation on the web anywhere for answers to this question.

Thanks in anticipation
