New Marking Block for 1.5 with additional features

New Marking Block for 1.5 with additional features

by Darren Smith -
Number of replies: 75
I have attached the latest 1.5 marking block which Mike Churchward developed for Egglescliffe School. The previous 1.5 release was just to get it to work with moodle 1.5 whereas this version contains some fixes and many new features:

Front page marking block smile
  • Teacher adds courses to display on front page marking block
  • Teacher can select which group within courses to display
  • Some information removed on front page to make the block a sensible size
Marking Page
  • An additional master button to save all feedback in one go
  • Update assignment links
  • Sorted by first student submission rather than most recent
  • Indication of how late a submission is
  • Marking for short answers in lessons
  • Marking turnaround
    • Each marked assignment shows how long it took the teacher to mark (marking date/time - student submission date/time)
    • Every assignment marking page shows average turnaround time for groups
  • Button to auto remind unsubmitted students
    • Default message from teacher
    • Unsubmitted checked as default
    • Time and date of notification stored (so can also check how many notifications have been sent)
    • Sent as a moodle message
Block
  • Unsubmitted sorted by amount of unsubmitted
  • Percentage sorted with highest first
Average of ratings: -

Hey Darran this is wonderful!!!
BTW dont you think it is better if we can configure 'Display users below this average mark' at course level also. (We may consider different average marks for different courses)

Darren

My faculty loves your marking block. Many depend upon it to keep them on track, some so much that they "presume" they are finished grading when everything in the Marking block is graded. But I noticed that graded glossary activities are not included in the Marking block we are currently using. Is this in the new version? If not, could you point me in the right direction to modify the block to include glossary activities?

thanks

Hi, Darren. First thank you for this useful tool. Second, I unzipped de program on block directory. When I used administration section on Moodle, the following message appears:

When you unzipped it was it set to preserve the folder/directory structure of the zip file?

It should be but you need to unzip it in the moodle folder and not the blocks folder then everything will put itself in the correct place. You will also need to delete the files which are in the wrong place first.

A Spanish translation (or any other) would be great. If you feed that back to me when you are done I will ask Mike to add it to the release.

I have attached the file you need to change. All you need to do is replace the English words on the right with your own.

I'm a little confused as to where the file should go though. I would have expected it to go in lang/en for English and lang/your_language_abbreviation for others but it would appear that it extracts to the same path but inside the marking block folder. I will get back to you on that!

Hi Darren et al,

I really want to thank you and also Mike for contributing this great block. approve Just a small request, would it be possible to pop this updated language file into CVS?  The old one is still in there, and it might save someone some time if they don't have to search for the upated file in the forum or edit it themselves.

Thanks again,

Hi Darren,
thanks for the wonderful block.

I have worked on slovak (sk) translation and have noticed that not all strings go from the language file. For example:
Marking Status
Total Unmarked
Overdue Users
User Overdue Assignments
Unmarked First Submissions:
Marked Submissions:
The following students have not submitted this assignment:

Please consider them to be moved into the language file so that foreign languages can fully be supported.

Also, teachers comments to be submitted are not shown in htmlarea editor but only in source code view. Some of our teachers may be scared of that. Is it possible to either use htmlarea or at least have it configurable?

Included follows slovak version of the language file.

Thanks again and back to student submissions that apparently have not been corrected.

Typo in marking/assign.marking.html (both in cvs and in the attachment here)
uasort($unmarked_first, 'mb_sort_umarked_first');
should read

Hi Julian -

This block doesn't touch the assignment files at all. It only installs files in the "blocks/marking" directory.

Now, it does call the files in the assignment library, but I would need to know where in the marking block it called from in order to examine this warning.

Darren

Our faculty loves your Marking Block. We did run into a bit of a "problem" using it with the Upload & Review assignment Mod from Humbolt. The block properly indicates that a student assignment needs grading but the Marking Status link for the unmarked assignment leads to a screen that indicates the student uploaded a document but does not show the uploaded file. The only way to see the student's document is through the Activities block, Assignment route to the Assignment Summary screen (index.php) and follow the link for Submitted Assignment. Have you run into this before?

In reply to Dawn Wright

Re: New Marking Block for 1.5 with additional features

Oh, yes I have seen this now you come to mention it. I don't think we were using the upload and review assignment type when we started this so have tended to stick with echo-assignment which we are finding a bit buggy now.

I will make a note of this for next time smile. It also does not fully function with inline comments IIRC.

Re: New Marking Block for 1.5 with additional features - missing lib.php

by Nathanael Klassen -

Thanks Mike and Darren. With the lib.php file the marking block is working. (And I see there is a stats.php file in CVS that wasn't there before either.)

When opening the marking.php page, I was getting "Table 'moodle.mdl_' doesn't exist SELECT * FROM mdl_ WHERE id = ''" errors. (I have debug on and didn't test with debug off to see if the messages still appeared.)

It looks like the get_all_mod() function called on line 107 of marking.php only returns modules that can have grades, but the loop at line 112 tries to process every module in the course. This causes the error when the module isn't in the $mod array.

To remove the messages, I added the following statement at line 119 along with the appropriate close tag at the end of the loop:

if (!empty($mod->modname)) {

At this point not a lot of our teachers use graded assignments, but for those who do, this block makes things so much easier.

Thanks again,
Nathanael

Re: New Marking Block for 1.5 with additional features - missing lib.php

by Nathanael Klassen -

I encountered one more issue with the marking block when logged in as a student. I didn't notice it before, because the issue didn't occur when logged in as a teacher, even when using the student view feature of 1.6dev.

We're running PHP 5.0.5 and it doesn't like passing array functions as parameters to other array functions. As a result, line 155 in lib.php causes an error and PHP stops processing the page. (I earlier added bug 4749 about a similar problem elsewhere in Moodle.)

To get the marking block working, I changed the line from this:

$pos = reset(array_keys($studs, $uid)) + 1;
to this:
$tmparray = array_keys($studs, $uid);
$pos = reset($tmparray) + 1;

Re: New Marking Block for 1.5 with additional features - missing lib.php

by Matt Gibson -
This is a great block! Thanks Darren and Mike!

I've installed and it works fine, but i have a couple of suggestions...

We teach modular courses and as several classes take each course, we have each class set up as a group. When it comes to grading, we need the right teachers to see the right assignments, but at the moment, two things get in the way. First, the block only 'remembers' one group selection at a time. If I have six courses, I cannot select a different group for each, it has to be 'All participants' for every course but one. Also, some teachers teach more than one group on a course. It would be better to be able to select groups using radio buttons like we select courses on the 'configure courses' menu.

Second, even within one module, sometimes we have more than one teacher teaching a class, so it's a problem even if we can choose groups effectively. What would be ideal would be a way of assigning each assignment for a particular group to a particular teacher. This also affects the email alerts, which currently bombard teachers with notifications for essays on a course they teach, but for a different class. I'm not sure how this would be implemented, but together with your block it would make moodle's marking system perfect.

Re: New Marking Block for 1.5 with additional features

Hello - thanks for your feedback.

Having 'sticky' groups on the first page (and indeed within courses) is something I also need so it is on the list for any future improvements smile

The second issue you raise is a moodle core issue more than something the marking block can pick up at this stage. This kind of group / activity has been slated for a future moodle release and it is certainly a feature a lot of us are waiting for smile

I have a similar problem. When i turned the error reporting up, I got this:

Notice: Undefined property: overdue in /var/www/psychunicode/blocks/marking/block_marking.php on line 763

Notice: Undefined property: overdue in /var/www/psychunicode/blocks/marking/block_marking.php on line 763

the line 763 error message repeats  few hundred times, then i get a few more of the line 258 ones come up, then i get the block itself.

Additionally, when i access an assignment, I get this at the top of the marking page:

Notice: Undefined index: 203 in /var/www/psychunicode/blocks/marking/marking.php on line 118
ERROR: relation "mdl_" does not exist

SELECT * FROM mdl_ WHERE id = ''

One of my students is getting 'error' when she tries to re-submit her work as online text. Possibly related? I have a feeling I may perhaps be missing some file somewhere.

Turned off error reporting till I know what's wrong.

MARKING BLOCK

INSTALLATION:

To install and use, unzip this file into your web root directory making sure that you 'use folder names'. This will add a new block directory (marking) to your '/blocks' directory and some language files to your langage directory. Once unzipped, visit your admin screen and configure the new block the way you want.

MAIN PURPOSE

The Marking block is a kind of block that provides a summary of activities awaiting grading. It includes a separate page that provides an alternate gradebook functionality ties to the marking block. This block is restricted to teachers and administrators. This block displays marking information for newly submitted, resubmitted, and overdue (activities past their defined close dates) activities. The marking page provides the same information and easy access to the grading functions for these activities.

This block cam also display a list of students below a certain grade level.

The block can be configured to display a maximum number of students in each list
and to set the grade level to display below.

This directory uses custom code for all activities it summarizes. There are few
common activity library functions that can perform the same operations, and thus
any new activities to be added will need new code.

Thank you very much Daniel

I've incorporated your bulgarian README and LANG file into the next version which will be available from now on at

Hi

I hope I'm not being dumb, but can you use this block in 1.7?

It seems to work when you have it in a course and then click on the grades bit, however we have it on the front page and have selected various courses. Unfortunately it just gives texts of those courses and nothing else.

What am I doing wrong? Or is it a 1.7 problem?

Please help!

Thanks

sorry Dan, but the marking block does not work in 1.7 nor 1.8 and was somewhat buggy in 1.5 and 1.6. As far as I know, no one is working on it at this time.

If you're looking for a replacement for the Marking Block, I'd highly recommend the "NotGraded" block... see here for Download.

The block is in Russian, but, I've just posted a en_utf8 language file to this thread.

Works beautifully in 1.6, 1.7, and 1.8.

Enjoy!!
