Aggregation style entered incorrectly and then changed results in wrong course grade totals

Aggregation style entered incorrectly and then changed results in wrong course grade totals

Instructor created a column for an assignment called Webinar. Grades entered incorrectly manually using "Simple Weighted Means" provide the correct number of points in the Max Grade column (710 points). When the instructor changes to "Sum of Grades" to match all the other grade categories the total points change to 50 less - 660 points in the max grade column.

we are using 1.9.8 Build 20100512

How can I get the sum of grades to be used and get the correct total?

Hi Bill,
660 is the correct number most probably.
When you use SWM, you simply type the max possible number manually.
So you can type 710, or 100, or 2 there. It would not natter.
That max grade will be treated as 100%. So, the students who will get 100%, will see 710, or 100, or 2.
Please double-check the possible sum of all of your items in the gradebook manually.
Also, it is better not to have any empty categories like the Webinar one.

Hi Elena hello from across the river in MPS, unless you are west bank.
Can you confirm for me that if i want a simple grading scheme for teachers who are used to total points but need exclusions and extra credit that SWM (no categories) with the max totaled by switching from sum to swm will do the trick and be accurate. I have lots of teachers getting into trouble with categories and not understanding the max.
If there is a better way to do this i would love to know.
-thx,
matt

hello from the east bank smile
Yes, you are correct.
p.s. We had a lot people confused with max grade area in SWM, so now the default for all courses is SUM, and then we instruct "advanced" users on the feature.

This seems like an appropriate place to put in a shameless plug for the gradebook enhancements provided in the CLAMP version most notably:
  • Total points for categories and course are automatically calculated
  • User report shows (or hides) columns for percent, letter, points, weight, range and feedback (see pic 1 below).
  • Easy toggling of Grader report column displays (see pic 2 below)

Hi Bill,
Thought I would answer your inquiry online in case others are interested.

  • CLAMP (Collaborative Liberal Arts Moodle Project) is pretty much, just that... a group of 25+ institutions (currently) whose main goal is to make Moodle work better for our collective needs.
  • To pursue that dream we hold "Hack-Doc Fests" where twenty or more "hackers" and "doc-ers" converge on a host campus for three days of grueling hacking and doc-ing (with some fun thrown in towards the end of each day)
  • The outcome of each event (we're on number VI) is an LAE (Liberal Arts Edition) of Moodle which packages all the hacks and some third-party mods and blocks we deem particularly useful and stable. We make this LAE available to the world through our website.
  • The gradebook enhancements mentioned below have just seen five months of real-life workout on some participating college campuses and will be included in the LAE version released this Summer (usually around mid-July). Anyone interested in seeing them sooner can contact me directly and I will send you a zip.txt.
