Could we leverage this for cross VoIP client support in Moodle?

Hey guys,

I was looking into the latest in AIR* development today and I came across a showcase application called TokBox: http://tokbox.com/, Wikipedia.org: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tokbox, PC Magazine review: http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2326578,00.asp

I've tried out both the desktop client which directly hooks into Yahoo, AOL, MSN Messenger & Google GTalk and allows you to call and message between different VoIP services so you're no longer locked into one. The great thing is, it also runs in web browsers with no VoIP client installation necessary. It supports telephony, video conferencing, chat and video message recording that can be forwarded to email accounts. It even lets users create video blogs (vlogs) that they can embed in their websites (i.e. Moodle vlogs?) it also leverages Twitter accounts to inform subscribers of new vlog posts. Users also get their own public web page, like Facebook.

This sounds like it could be really useful for bringing enhanced, high-end social networking directly into Moodle. I'm wondering if it would be possible to leverage this as some kind of activity module + side block?

It has an API with documentation here: http://developers.tokbox.com/index.php/Main_Page

The API is hosted on Google Code: http://code.google.com/p/tokboxapi/

It has a bunch of SDKs for a variety of languages: http://code.google.com/p/tokboxapi/downloads/list

Does this look too good to be true? There's gotta be a catch somewhere!

Hi Matt

I've been referring to Tokbox in my 'Social Networking' and 'Moodle in Business' presentations at Moodle Moots around the world for 18 months now !

It would be great if some Moodle developers can hook into this great app in some way smile

Yeah, it's pretty easy to set some rudimentary video blog portals and "conference centres" just by copying and pasting code from their wizard. We really should provide deeper integration with Moodle so that we can handle invitations to conferences for groups and repositories of links to users' vlogs. This kind of thing isn't rocket science to set up and it'd be a very powerful tool to add to Moodle's box ;)

Hi,

I have been reading several comments including Tim Hunt's suggestion and yours saying how simple this would be? Unfortunately this seems to be beyond my capabilities. But more importantly: Why hasn't anybody done it if it's that simple? I'm puzzled.

Can you advise on what would need to be done, in what order, using what "simple tools"?

I'd love to get my teeth into something like Nanogong's repository plug-in, but the tracker descriptions are too techie for me. I have managed to get Covcell's Red5 stuff to work on Moodle 1.9.x, but this is out of my league. Where does one start and how to proceed - if it's so easy?
