Concept-mapping module?

Hello,
Is there a concept-mapping module (CMC) in existence or in someone else's imagination?
There seems to be a beautiful one made Estonia, described at http://cmc.ihmc.us/cmc2006Papers/cmc2006-p78.pdf.
There is a comparison of CMCs available and I agree with their conclusion that there is no very good one for education that is also free. So they made their own but I'm not a programmer and I don't see anything about exporting or interoperability so I assume it can't be "plugged in" to Moodle.
Is there any CMC capability in Moodle?

Thanks,

Michael C.

Hi Michael,

My favourite is the MindMap module - http://moodle.org/mod/data/view.php?d=13&rid=1628.

There's also a filter to display mind maps created in FreeMind - see http://moodle.org/mod/data/view.php?d=13&rid=886 for more info. If you want to use this, you'll need to download FreeMind as well.

Hi Jon,
Thanks for your response. In the link people are talking about viewing it from the Admin side. I only have Course Creator and I just want to take a quick look at the functionality. Especially, can you edit a note on the line linking the two concepts? Could someone put up a screen capture?

Michael, I'm not sure how others have set the MindMap module up - but mine works very well, and is viewable by students, teachers and admins.

If you make the MindMap editable, then students and teachers can view, edit and save; if not, then just teachers and admins can view, edit and save - and students can only view.

Screenshot attached - but if you want to play with the functionality, have a look at http://en.ekpenso.com/.

The advantage with the MindMap module is that the map can be created and contained within Moodle. The disadvantage is that it cannot be exported in it's own right from the Moodle module, although the functionality to export maps to XML, PDF, image or FreeMind files is available in the online version.

The advantages with the FreeMind filter are that the software has more functionality and export options, but the disadvantages are that it needs separate software, the mindmap is contained outside Moodle and would require updating when the map is changed, and it's not editable by students. If you want to know more about FreeMind, have a look at http://freemind.sourceforge.net/wiki/index.php/Main_Page

As with most things Moodle, it's a matter of choice based on what you are trying to achieve smile

Hi Michael.

Just found this discussion and wanted to tell you that I'm already working on a Concept Map question type for Moodle. The first beta version is ready and available for downloading and installing in Moodle 2.0.

The discussion is here. A screenshot is also attached.

Cheers,
Jorge
