Block: Quickmail for large classes (aka Quickmail v2)

quickmail_for_large_class
Type: Block
Requires: Moodle 1.9 or later
Status: Contributed
Maintainer(s): Wen Hao Chuang

This is a quickmail hack with enhanced GUI designed for larger classes. Instead of using checkbox, we use side-by-side selection blocks for easy email recipients selection. Please note, similar to the original quickmail, this block DOES require Javascript be ENABLED in your Web browser. Please check with your Web browser setting (in FireFox, go to Tools -> Options -> Content -> Enable JavaScript) to make sure this block would work correctly. Thanks!

The latest version of this quickmail block is v2.7, which has "email history support", "external email client support", and Moodle GROUPS support. Please email me if you have questions about this block (whchuang at gmail dot com). Thanks!

Notice that I'm not using the CVS (moodle CONTRIB) to update this block any more, so if you want the latest code, please download from the updated link or email me. Thanks!

Thank you for adding this.
I added the files as downloaded and then installed them causing my admin page to disappear. Should the existing block files be overwritten with your versions please?
Thanks

Yes if you already have previous quickmail (v1) installed, you should be able to directly overwrite the old files with these new files and everything should work out right away. I tested this already and it went OK. We are still using exactly the same database structure with the original quickmail v1 (created by Michael Penny and Mark Nielsen so you should only notice the GUI changed, but nothing else.. smile

Hi: This is a great block idea, but I'm having some troubles getting it to run (v1 for small course worked well). The problem is that although I have selected recipients, I am getting an error saying I need to select recipients.

A second issue found when examining the code is that "iLearn" (a customized name for Moodle) is hard-coded in the error messages, along with specific instructions in case an error is found. Those wishing to use this block should make the appropriate changes for their institutions.

By the way we did some minor changes to use the standard moodle theme for the arrow keys (>> and <<) instead of using special characters. These changes are documented in the readme.txt I believe... Enjoy! smile

Would you please add the Group feature soon? I have several courses working for long time with Groups and Quickmail has been their best way to communicate. This is a big course and Groups are a must.

We are using 1.8.2 and Groups is working with activities!

I attempted to install this block today on a Moodle 1.8+ site. I unzipped the files into moodle/blocks which created a directory called quickmail. I visited the admin page and it attempted to do the install. Although the log claimed there were no errors it indicated that a block named 'blockname (Beta)' had been installed. When I visited admin>modules>blocks I did not see a Quick Mail block but I did see a 'blcokname (Beta)' block. I deleted that block and deleted a mysql tables named ${prefix}_block_quickmail_log which had been created. I did not see any other tables. Perhaps the 'delete' of the block took care of any other tables.

After this failed attempt I compared the contents of quickmailv2.zip and the original quickmail.zip. I noticed that quickmailv2 did not include a 'lang' directory. Also, the quickmailv2/db directory was missing files which appeared in the quickmail/db directory.

Did I do something incorrectly or is the zip file I downloaded incomplete?

Hi Bee Bell, we are currently working on other bug fixes for other projects but adding group feature for the quickmail is on our to-do list. Stay tuned, it should be available sometime next month (October 2007). smile

Hi Patrick, thanks for reporting this issue. I have updated the language files and the readme.txt and fixes those missing string issues. Please try out the newest version and see if it works for you, thanks!

I have installed this block in Moodle 1.8. It works great except for one thing.
When I send the email to the students, the emails only give my name as the sender, but it does not include the senders email address. So, the students cannot reply to the sender. How can I fix this?

I have a problem with quickmail buttons "Add", "Remove", "Add all" and "Remove all". They don't work at all. I'm using Moodle 1.8.3. I have tried everything that I could come up with and no solution yet. Any suggestions or help is greatly appriciated.

I think this mod is great...any way to get groups to work in it? I frequently only need to get ahold of a select group of students. In a large class it is pretty hard.

Thanks for the bug report and comments. We are super busy right now to make sure that our server could handle the final exam load right now. Next week I could probably take a look at the issues that Paul, Russ, and Brian reported. Thanks again for providing these comments and feedback..

Has anyone gotten Quickmail to work as either a sticky block OR a default block via config.php. no matter what I do the block will not show up.... This is on both 1.8.4 and 1.9beta4. Thanks!

As of today (April 26, 2008), the latest version of this plugin is from Sep. 18, 2007. Wen, did you find time to check the things you have mentioned on Dec. 20, 2007? I am looking for groups support.

Thanks.

Hi Robert, I have also replied to you with Moodle IM. As I mentioned, here at SFSU we intentionally disabled the "group" support due to some issues. I believe the other quickmail block (http://moodle.org/mod/data/view.php?d=13&rid=92) should have the group features enabled. It is on my to-do list to re-enable the group feature but it has lower priority for now. If someone want to try to merge these two blocks and re-enable and test the groups support that would be great! If no volunteers, I might be able to work on this issue after June 10th 2008. Sorry about this.

Morning All,

I have just installed this block and it is a brilliant little alternative to some which can be downloaded and being able to email course members from within Moodle is brilliant.

One issue - can the FROM email address be changed?
I have looked into the Moodle settings and changed the email settings but with no luck. Another thing maybe to link it into the email address of the user who is logged in????

Hi Moodlers

We've just upgraded our Moodle site to 1.9 (from 1.8), and last night I "broke" Quickmail!!! sad It seemed to happen at exactly the same time that I added a non-editing teacher as a hidden role ... now when you follow the Quickmail "Compose" link, it returns a nasty blank screen! dead

I deleted the hidden role, QM still not working; I deleted the QM block and then re-added it - still no joy. I made this boo-boo on 2 courses (both configured as metacourses, if that makes any difference?). The other 32 courses on the site work fine, it's just the first two that I've killed.

Any ideas? Is it just a case of waiting till an upgraded QM for 1.9 is released?

Ooops!!! blush My apologies - I didn't realise when I hit the "next" button that it took me to Quickmail for large classes!!! I've reposted my question/comment in the "garden variety" Quickmail thread ...

There is a problem with Quickmail and groups under Moodle 1.9.1. There is a tracker report available here:

http://tracker.moodle.org/browse/CONTRIB-346

The white screen of death because of a fatal PHP error, which is detailed in the tracker report. That error in turn is because of a groups-related function that's deprecated in Moodle 1.9; the code needs to be revised to work with the groups API.

Not to be a bother, but do you have a patch or beta or update for Quickmail for large classes that will work with Moodle 1.9 as a sticky block? Currently if I add it as a course sticky block instructors cannot open access to it for students (using the Allow access to students option in the setting link on the block). Has anyone come up with a fix by chance?? Thanks in adavance!!

Hi I just put a new release on my web site. The direct link is
http://userwww.sfsu.edu/~wchuang/quickmailv2_for_mdl19.zip

This version should work with attachment, however, the group feature is still intentionally disabled. Also for some browsers (e.g. Safari) the HTML editor in the Message might not work, etc. Please report bugs to this thread, thanks!

We are currently at version 1.9.4.

I downloaded the quickmail zip for version 1.9, and copied the files it into a quickmail folder within the blocks folder as directed.

When I visit the Notifications link, the install kicks off and creates the log table and indexes with success, but I get this message:

quickmail block could not be added to the block list!

Has anyone solved this issue?

Picture of Owen Grubbs
by Owen Grubbs - Saturday, September 19, 2009, 04:37 AM

My issue above with

quickmail block could not be added to the block list!

is actually a issue with the database, not with the quickmail block install.

The error is happening on our newly installed dev box (which has a copy of our moodle install and  MSSQL database), not our production box. It appears that I get errors everytime the moodle app attempts to insert a row in a moodle table.

Hi,

I'm using Quickmail and it works great! I can send a mail to my students and they receive my mail with my name.
But if they want to reply, they reply to the mail-address of Moodle and not my own e-mailaddress.

Can anybody help me with this problem?

Thank you very much!

Regards,
Ruben

I noticed that once upgrading to 1.9.7 QuickMail stopped working.  To get it back up as a "quick fix", I commented the lines where it checks for permissions in email.php

/*

Check if user have permissions to use Quickmail
    if (!$haspermission) {
        error('Sorry, you do not have the correct permissions to use Quickmail.');
    }

*/

Will be checking what broke in the quickmail->checkpermission method, and see if it's a quick fix.

Does quickmail for large classes contain it's own logic for sending email? I've been having a problem where not all of the recipients receive the email. This only happens on classes that have over 1,000 students. We have not been able to track down the cause of the problem. I'm wondering if QuickMail is worth a try to see if it will resolve our problem. I believe moodle was not designed to handle messaging for very large classes so I'm looking for something that will bypass the inefficiencies and limitations of moodle's default email handler. Any thoughts?

Hi dear all:

I'm releasing v2.7 as a early beta for further testing. It can be downloaded through the links provided, or please email me (whchuang at gmail dot com) for the zip file. This version added back the "email history" support, as well as the Group support and we re-factored the cods a little bit (thanks to Cliff's help). We only tested this on Moodle 1.9.5, so if anyone who could help test it out on Moodle 1.9.7 and Moodle 2.0, that would be great. Thanks!

If you made some local customization with this block that you think other people might be interested, please also let me know, thanks!

Wen

We just found some bugs and fixed them, will release the latest v2.7.3 shortly. By the way, if you don't need GROUPS support or email history support, you probably could be happier with the older v2.6. After 2.7 we added GROUP support and email history support, but it would require SMARTY support (might be more difficult for some people to install correctly)...

Also if you want to make the "default" to allow students to use Quickmail block (the original default is NO), you could modify the /blocks/quickmail/block_quickmail.php file, at around line #277 (under the function "load_defaults()"), there is one line:

$defaults->allowstudents = 0;

You could modify this line to:

$defaults->allowstudents = 1;

Hope this helps. smile

Hi,
I added a small feature to Quickmail. It adds at the bottom of the message a list with all recipients. You can choose between "name of the users" and "name of the groups". As a third possibility you can choose "automatic" (default). If you select this option and there are less then 15 recipients it lists the name of the users, otherwise it lists the name of the groups the mail has been sent too.
Where should/could I put the code?
Greets,
Stefan

Does this version of Quickmail keep the formatting of messages correct when using the Safari browser? We have an earlier version on Quickmail that when used with Safari causes all formatting to be lost.

What is the maximum number of recipients in this version. I have the other version running, but when I send about 60 recipients, not all the emails get sent.

I am trying to figure out if this is mail server issue or Moodle.

Hello to all Quickmailers smile
hello Wen,

great plugin.
I use version 2.7.2, everything works as expected with one exception:
Attachments doesn't work.
If i attach a file, I get only a white browser window, nothing else.
What could be wrong? Is it a bug, or a problem with permissions?

Thanks for any suggestion or hint
Andreas

P.S. Moodle Versions I have tested: 1.9.2 and 1.9.8+

Hi Wen,

Thanks for putting in the effort to create this plugin, much of the functionality works great, but i have a couple of weird issues.

1. when receiving a HTML formatted quickmail message, the HTML formatting are all gone

2. and whatever pictures included also dissapears

Has anyone experienced similar issues?
can you give me any pointers as to what goes wrong?

Thanks

I am the administrator. Quickmail has been working but now the  module does not show when logged in as me. Other users can still see and use the block. I have to be in edit mode and it still just shows that there is a block installed. I can't use it. I have deleted and reentered myself as a user. I have reinstalled Quickmail. Still nothing. Any ideas?
