Hi
Thanks for your Book module.

The books on my course can be opened and read well by teachers/administrators but some students (not all???) complained that they can not read the images on some chapter's pages. If i log in as a teacher/administrator and switch to the student's account with "Login As" button before I open the book I(the students) really can not see the image(only see the alternative name) But if I opened it once as a teacher/administrator and read the chapters and "Loggin As" the students again the image can be read (from the same machine). We use Moodle 1.5.3 and Firefox Browser. I have checked the server side and the image files mode is correct.

I found the image files under the backupdata directory and i moved some of images out of this directory and these images can be seen correctly (with the tested students). Is is possible the problem is here that the backupdata dir is special? (e.g. not allowed visiting from users log in/registered as a student to read from dir.
Thanks.

Hello,
I'm getting an error everytime I try to use the book module.

Internal Server Error
The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.
Please contact .......

It is at http://www.xxxxxxx/mod/book/view.php?id=74

I think that this may be a server issue. Does anyone have any suggestions?

My server is using a version of PHP that moodle says has known issues.

Cheers,
Vernon

as suggested, i have unzipped the file to the mod directory. However, in the admin mode, the book module is not picked up. so, the question is, after unzipping in mod directory, do i need to run any file to ensure the setup

It is not in admin mode. You just need to type in your browser your Moodle site name + /admin/, and it will be installed. It did install for me, but I have problems afterwards as the activity is unnamed in dropdown activity list and gives error "This module type doesn't exist" if selected. Anybody has successful installations on Moodle 1.7?

Hi Edward!
In my case - no successful installations! Have you got a solution?

Hello andy, the problem and solution is "privileges". try to give administration permission to all the students while you install this module , try connecting as a student, and later take away the admnistration permissions...

Perfect tool: download OK, installation simple (as described in Readme.txt), works fine on moodle 1.7.2 (upgraded from 1.6.4, 1.6.5)

Thanks Petr!

Hi there,

Unfortunately, I too have problems with the book module. It downloaded fine for Moodle 1.8. I uploaded it via FTP, decompressed and the folder 'book' is there. However, the module doesn't show it the assignment drop down menu.

Did this happen to anyone?

Installation went smoothly for me on v. 1.8.2.
After unzipping the book.zip package in the mod directory, you need to go to http://<yoursite.com>/admin -- then you should see the book tables being built for the module. If all is successful you should then have the book module showing up in your "Add a resource" list.
Many thanks to the developer(s)! I'll enjoy working with this module.

I downloaded and installed from the 1.8 link. When I went to Notifications, I got the following error:

Module "book" (2007052000) could not be installed. It requires a newer version of Moodle (currently you are using 2007021503, you need 2007021505).

Can anyone tell me how to fix this without reinstalling a fresh version of Moodle? And just what do those numers (2007021503 and 2007021505) mean?

Thank ya much.

I just upgraded my moodle to 1.8.3 and the Book module seems fine but only the users as teacher role can not have the interface for uploading the image files (with button)as they would like to insert images to the book.
If I try this image inserting again as an administrator role the image file browser/upload interface showed up correctly.
I know this problem concerns about the role's definition/permission.
How/where can I modify to let the teacher role have the browse/upload interface showed up as trying to insert a image file?

Thanks.

Hi folks,

Love the Book module. Only problem is trying to get stats on usage.

When I try to run a participation report in Moodle 1.8.2 I get the error:

"Module book is missing the code needed to perform this function"

I can't seem to find where I need to change/update the book code, anyone have any suggestions?

Books show up when I run a full course Activity report.

We have been using this module from 1.6 onwards, always praying that it be available for the next version too. We hope this will be made a standard module in Moodle

After installing the actual book module for moodle 1.9 in an actual moodle-1.9+ it was available in courses. But after a try to create a new book users only got a blank page. I increased the debug level and saw that the problem is line 3 of mod_form.php in the book module. The line is

require_once ('moodleform_mod.php');

and this file can not be found. After looking at the code form other modules I changed this line to the following one

require_once($CFG->dirroot.'/course/moodleform_mod.php');

With this line the book module just works fine.

This looks like a great module but the download link for 1.9 is down. Could you please try and get it to work again sad as I'm really looking forward to adding this on to my Moodle installation. Thanks for all the hard work you have put into the book module

Hi:
Is it possible to assign a grade to a student when he reads a page of the book?
Is it possible to register how many times and for how long he has been reading each page?

Hi:

I've been using the book module under 1.8.2 and 1.9+ and it works ok execpt by the backup module. If you insert images in a book located in the own course, it saves them as "../../file.php/course_id/...." and when backing up, it does not translate into relative path; so in tou use the backup to instal a new course, this images does not appear.

I've got a solution modifying the backuplib.php and restorelib.php under \moodle\mod\book

In the end of function book_encode_content_links in backuplib.php (about lines 105-125) change:

original:

 function book_encode_content_links ($content,$preferences) {

global $CFG;

$base = preg_quote($CFG->wwwroot,"/");

$result = $content;

//Link to the list of books
 $buscar="/(".$base."\/mod\/book\/index.php\?id\=)([0-9]+)/";
 $result= preg_replace($buscar,'$@BOOKINDEX*$2@$',$result);

//Link to book's specific chapter
 $buscar="/(".$base."\/mod\/book\/view.php\?id\=)([0-9]+)\&chapterid\=([0-9]+)/";
 $result= preg_replace($buscar,'$@BOOKCHAPTER*$2*$3@$',$result);

//Link to book's first chapter
 $buscar="/(".$base."\/mod\/book\/view.php\?id\=)([0-9]+)/";
 $result= preg_replace($buscar,'$@BOOKSTART*$2@$',$result);

return $result;
 }
new:
 function book_encode_content_links ($content,$preferences) {

global $CFG;

$base = preg_quote($CFG->wwwroot,"/");

$result = $content;

 //Link to the list of books
 $buscar="/(".$base."\/mod\/book\/index.php\?id\=)([0-9]+)/";
 $result= preg_replace($buscar,'$@BOOKINDEX*$2@$',$result);

//Link to book's specific chapter
 $buscar="/(".$base."\/mod\/book\/view.php\?id\=)([0-9]+)\&chapterid\=([0-9]+)/";
 $result= preg_replace($buscar,'$@BOOKCHAPTER*$2*$3@$',$result);

//Link to book's first chapter
 $buscar="/(".$base."\/mod\/book\/view.php\?id\=)([0-9]+)/";
 $result= preg_replace($buscar,'$@BOOKSTART*$2@$',$result);

//Last, we check for every call to file.php inside the book
 if (!isset($preferences)) {
 $mypreferences = $CFG->backup_preferences;
 } else {
 //We are in manual backups so global preferences must exist!!
 $mypreferences = $preferences;
 }

$search = array($CFG->wwwroot.'/file.php/'.$mypreferences->backup_course,
 $CFG->wwwroot.'/file.php?file=/'.$mypreferences->backup_course,
 '../../file.php/'.$mypreferences->backup_course,
 '../../file.php?file=/'.$mypreferences->backup_course);

$replace = array('$@FILEPHP@$','$@FILEPHP@$','$@FILEPHP@$','$@FILEPHP@$');

$result = str_replace($search,$replace,$result);

return $result;
 }
In the end of function book_decode_content_links in restorelib.php (about lines 271-295) change:
original:
 $searchstring='/\$@(BOOKSTART)\*([0-9]+)@\$/';
 //We look for it
 preg_match_all($searchstring,$result,$foundset);
 //If found, then we are going to look for its new id (in backup tables)
 if ($foundset[0]) {
 //print_object($foundset); //Debug
 //Iterate over foundset[2]. They are the old_ids
 foreach($foundset[2] as $old_id) {
 //We get the needed variables here (course_modules id)
 $rec = backup_getid($restore->backup_unique_code,"course_modules",$old_id);
 //Personalize the searchstring
 $searchstring='/\$@(BOOKSTART)\*('.$old_id.')@\$/';
 //If it is a link to this course, update the link to its new location
 if($rec->new_id) {
 //Now replace it
 $result= preg_replace($searchstring,$CFG->wwwroot.'/mod/book/view.php?id='.$rec->new_id,$result);
 } else {
 //It's a foreign link so leave it as original
 $result= preg_replace($searchstring,$restore->original_wwwroot.'/mod/book/view.php?id='.$old_id,$result);
 }
 }
 }

return $result;
 }

new:

 $searchstring='/\$@(BOOKSTART)\*([0-9]+)@\$/';
 //We look for it
 preg_match_all($searchstring,$result,$foundset);
 //If found, then we are going to look for its new id (in backup tables)
 if ($foundset[0]) {
 //print_object($foundset); //Debug
 //Iterate over foundset[2]. They are the old_ids
 foreach($foundset[2] as $old_id) {
 //We get the needed variables here (course_modules id)
 $rec = backup_getid($restore->backup_unique_code,"course_modules",$old_id);
 //Personalize the searchstring
 $searchstring='/\$@(BOOKSTART)\*('.$old_id.')@\$/';
 //If it is a link to this course, update the link to its new location

if($rec->new_id) {
 //Now replace it
 $result= preg_replace($searchstring,$CFG->wwwroot.'/mod/book/view.php?id='.$rec->new_id,$result);
 } else {
 //It's a foreign link so leave it as original
 $result= preg_replace($searchstring,$restore->original_wwwroot.'/mod/book/view.php?id='.$old_id,$result);
 }
 }
 }
 //Now decode wwwroot and file.php calls
 $search = array ("$@FILEPHP@$");

//Check for the status of the slasharguments config variable
 $slash = $CFG->slasharguments;

 //Build the replace string as needed
 if ($slash == 1) {
 $replace = array ($CFG->wwwroot."/file.php/".$restore->course_id);
 } else {
 $replace = array ($CFG->wwwroot."/file.php?file=/".$restore->course_id);
 }

 $result = str_replace($search,$replace,$result);
 return $result;
 }

And now backup is running ok

Hi,
I'm currently working on a new moodle plugin and I need to export books as IMS-CP. Is it possible to move functions from "generateimscp.php" file to a library file?

Doing this way I can use your functions and in the future I wouldn't have problems due book module updates.

Is it possible for the developer to do this?

Many thanks,
Mauro Nidola

Hi
We are using book modulo at the University here in Brazil (UFRGS) and import function is very important. If we import a book which has a link to one file in the original course, either it comes without the file or with all the files of the course.

Isn´t there a solution for this behaviour?

Thanks

Marcelo

Use course backuo and just backup the book and course files then click restore beside the backup and either add to an existing course or create a new course.

I love this Module. May I request two features though?

It would be fantastic to be able to download a book in eithe PDF or HTML format as well as be able to search within the content of a book. We have quite a need for something like that since we are doing work for the DOD and they require that.

Thanks, Lionel

Thank you, very helpful contributions, especially yours, and to implement each of the steps carefully, and I run.
For a moment I had not worked, and not seen in the drop-down combo resources and restart the server, enter the Notifications option, and there was a message waiting to be given CONTINUE
After that came the smart choice and works

Any answer about Moodle 2.0? Will we see it on moodle 2.0 (and when approximately)? Any answer will help to make a decision either to wait for release or start writing something similar.

Will be very grateful for an answer.
