Activity Module: MLE-Moodle (Moodle for mobile phones)

Type: Activity Module
Requires: Moodle 1.8 or later
Status: Contributed
Maintainer(s): Meisenberger Matthias

MLE-Moodle
turns your Moodle installation to a mLearning platform (mobile learning / learning with mobile phones). We use the MLE (Mobile Learning Engine), which is a special mLearning application for mobile phones, to access your Moodle installation. But you can use the standard web-browser on your mobile phone too, to access your Moodle installation. You can use most of the standard Moodle activities (eq: quiz, survey, lesson, assignemnts, ...) and resources (html-page, text-page, multimedia, directories, ...) on your mobile phone as well as additional new (mLearning) activities, such as:
  • Mobile Learning objects (offline learning on the phone)
  • A flashcard trainer (after the Leitner-System, with a synchronization feature for the mobile phone; eg. used for: for vocabulary learning)
  • Mobile Tags (create special barcodes for activities or resources, if the user takes a picture of this barcode, he is redirected to the activity/resource)

Furthermore the Moodle messaging system works on the mobile phone too and we have some new Moodle-blocks. On of these blocks allows the easy installation of the mobile phone software on your phone (preconfigured for your Moodle installation).

You can try it out with a phone emulation software, found here:
http://mle.sourceforge.net/demo_mle_moodle.php

and our Demo MLE-Moodle installation, where you can create content and tested it with the web-browser:
http://elibera.com/testing/moodle91/
(Username/Password: student/student)

The whole project (with all software parts) is open source under the GPL. For further details (including a list of all features and the full documentation), please take a look at the project homepage:

Here are some screenshots, how it could look like, if you access your Moodle server with the web-browser on the phone:

I was trying to install this to the 'mod' directory of my site and when I click on 'Notifications', Moodle responds with:

Module mle_moodle_0.7.5: /home/misterskipper/misterskipper.com/mod/mle_moodle_0.7.5/version.php was not readable

It makes sense as there is no version.php file in the folder. I am not sure if it is a bug or if there is something else I am missing to make this work. This is my first Moodle install, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

This looks like exceptional work and I am extremely excited for the potential this has, especially extending the learning environment beyond the classroom. My eighth grade students are chomping at the bit to play with this. Thanks again...

Just for further reference. if you meet that problem, try chmod 233 or something similar so you solve access problems.

I'm attempting to use MLE on Moodle 1.9.4+ and like what I see so far, except for the Upcoming Events link in courses. I've added course events, but they never appear when I select the Upcoming Events link in MLE. They do show on the regular course using a regular browser though.

I'm using the MLE URL on my iPod Touch, if that helps.

Hi. I have a site where the module is not working properly. The mle info page shows a wrong "Moodle Server". Where can I fix it manually? In the DB or which file?
